Happy Birthday Velvet!

Velvet July turns 13 today! She began her day with a can of tuna.
Earlier this week, she received a birthday coupon from PetSmart. We could choose a toy or treats, and we chose the treats!

She loves her lambswool bed!

As you can tell by her nose and chin, she also loves milk!

The Benezette Bear

I took the photos below between October 27 and October 30, 2011 while staying at the Elk Country Hideaway in Benezette, PA.

This bear had little fear of humans, but that does not give one the right to approach it.

The bear was trying to remove frozen birdseed from the deck railing. It was amazing how gentle he was. He was never aggressive nor destructive.

He carefully used his claws to remove the seed.

Here he is checking around the shed. Bears never miss an inch while searching for food.

This was the evening after the surprising October snowfall.

His paw print in the snow.
He was a great bear. We really enjoyed watching him each evening.

It's a shame how many animals are put to sleep, while others are being reproduced just for money.
Please adopt a pet from your local shelter instead of going to a breeder.

A Hero...

I would like to thank Carol Molina for being a hero to many helpless, unwanted and abandoned cats. She spends her life (and her own money) helping to rescue and house cats. She cares for them until she can find homes for them. She will go anywhere to pick up a cat who is sick, injured or in fear of losing it's home.

There are many heartless and irresponsible pet owners out there and, thanks to Carol, many cats will have a happy ending.

Because of Carol's support, the two cats in the above photos have a safe and loving home. She was a place to "fall back on". If it would not be for Carol, these two would be at a shelter right now. Instead, they are lounging in beds, watching birds, eating, playing and enjoying life!!

Thank you, Carol. May you be blessed for all you do.

An Apple Sighting!!!

A big "Thank You" to my friend, Melody, who looked for Apple during her recent trip to Benezette. I was so happy to receive the email that Apple is alive and well. I had been trying to find out if she survived the so-called "hunt" for the last two months. So thankful she is OK and we will have a chance to see her again.

We have seen Apple quite a few times over the years in areas ranging from the Hicks Run Cemetery to an area off of Winslow Hill Road. She takes very good care of her babies. I have a wonderful scene on videotape. Her herd had moved on, but she stayed behind and waited for the young one to catch up. It was very touching.

I would also like to thank Terri for looking for Apple during her recent trip to the area. It is really nice to have friends who care enough to check on an elk for me. Many thanks to you both!

The Great Willard Hill

Many know Willard Hill. They know him as the Pennsylvania Wildlife Photographer. Willard's most important characteristic is that he truly cares about wildlife. He is not in this for fame or profit. He spends countless hours supporting and protecting deer and elk. He makes many people aware of unlawful and unethical situations. It is tough to write and talk about negativity toward these majestic creatures when one cares so much about them, but, Willard puts his feelings aside, in order to shed light on what is going on. The only hope for change is making people aware of the situation.

I took the photo below in October of last year. We were on top of the saddle, in the middle of the elk herd. This shows Willard's kindness. With his camera equipment, he could have stayed back and gotten perfect photos. I only have a 200mm lens, so I could not get good photos from where we were standing. He was kind enough to lead us up the hill, until we came to a point where I could get the closest and best shot I have taken in their natural habitat.

I remember it was so cold and the ground was very muddy. As the sun was going down, Willard packed his camera equipment and we started down the hill. What a surprise when we turned around and saw this amazing sunset!! Willard, quickly, got his cameras back out :) I took this photo of him photographing this beautiful scene. What a great evening.

I have cancelled my facebook account, but, before I signed off, I saved this great photo Richard posted on my wall. My dad took this photo of me and Richard at the cross in Benezette, PA on 10-29-11. I thought it would be nice to share it on my blog. Thanks, Richard! It was great to finally meet you. I hope we can keep in touch through email and our blogs.

Gilbert

This is Gilbert. He showed up at our house and begged for attention. I fed him, but he needed more than food. He needed a home. It was obvious that he had a home at some point in his life. On December 4 at 1:00 am, I called for him and he came into the porch. I thought he was a girl, so I named him Cissy.

Here is Lola checking him out. He continued to stay on our porch until we found him a home. I had plans to take him to the shelter, but I had a lead on a home, so we kept him in the meantime. On December 13, during a vet visit, I found out that he is a neutered male. The biggest surprise is that he is approximately 8 years old. I felt very badly that a senior kitty was left outside to fend for himself in this cold weather.

This photo shows that he was not happy to meet Lola. No worries......he is safe and will only meet other cats on his own terms. He is afraid and very much non-aggressive. I can tell that he did not have a good life prior to meeting us. His actions show that he was mistreated or had a scary life once he was abandoned. It is so sad how some people are such irresponsible and uncaring pet owners.

Gilbert enjoys meals! :)

On December 26, we decided to keep him, because of his age and his fear of other animals and humans. We felt this is the safest and best place for him. We are SO HAPPY to have him and thankful he will have a happy ending.
